A Peek at Plant Personalities

Search any essential oil and you'll get some version of:

Lavender: calming, sleep, anxiety.
Peppermint: focus, headaches, digestion.

These tidy lists are not a bad place to start (I have a 610hr clinical aromatherapy certification and I do find it invaluable for the work I do)…but they also kind of reinforce the “this medicine is good for this symptom” pharmaceutical approach to working with plants.

And that is not what sacred aromatics is all about.

We are moving away from the old models that teach us to outsource our knowing and fragment into various parts.

Instead, we are entering into a new era where our direct relationships with plants guide our experiences and choices. Where we recognize that we are complex beings living with ecosystems upon ecosystems, and plants can help us return to wholeness when we truly learn to listen.

Do you know the language of plants?

Plants are always teaching us about their gifts and medicine — and the more skillful we become in listening, the more transformational wisdom they can share with us.

I find that plant parts are a really accessible place to start. For example:

  • Roots like vetiver hold and anchor, so they tend to feel grounding and slow.
  • Resins like frankincense are the plant’s wound-healing and protective response, and they can help us sink into sacred protection during our own healing processes.
  • Peels like bergamot protect the fruit and radiate outward, and they tend to feel bright and lifting.
  • Seeds are the beginning of all life — they hold the blueprint of potentiality for our unfolding and spark us into action when we need to move.
  • Flowers have an affinity for influencing the spiritual dimensions of life (which is why we anointed with a flower in your last email!)

Next time you smell an essential oil, ask what the part of the plant it was made from might teach you about its gifts and medicine.

And — this is important — what role does that part of the plant play in the larger ecosystem?

The way short-lived flowers support through pollination or long-lived trees provide protective canopies. The way wild weeds and herbs spread throughout fields and berries fall to ground offering nourishment for an abundance of creatures.

This line of inquiry is how aromatics connect more deeply with the earth alongside our own souls.

In Sacred Aromatics Foundations, we explore the intelligence of plant parts — why root, resin, flower, leaf, peel, seed, and wood carry different material and energetic relationships, and how this can deepen your practice.

We also spend time with five allies in depth: Rose. Frankincense. Bergamot. Vetiver. Juniper.

You’ll begin learning how to encounter these plants not simply as ingredients, but as aromatic allies you can continue working with long after the six weeks are over.

We begin Wednesday, October 14.

Still here? Wow - you deserve a present :) A tiny secret for you before you go:

There’s a beautiful calming point in the ear located just behind the little cartilage fold at the front of the upper ear. Hold it gently on both sides for one minute and take a slow breath. It’s especially lovely with a drop of anointing oil. ;)

Behind the scenes over here I am just as spiritual-earth-mama-priestess-artist as you might think. What you see is what you get. And…I love tracking what's happening in our collective cultural spaces — especially when it comes to the feminine, empowerment, beauty, and equality. Which can all veer a bit into pop culture territory. I mean, I didn't obsessively watch the Johnny Depp - Amber Heard trials…but I was shocked by the collective coverage that seemed so punitive toward the woman...

Blessed Equinox, Reader! Persephone has begun her chthonic descent. Virgo is releasing the reigns of control to the fair and harmonious Libra. And here in the northern hemisphere, like our ancestors before us, we begin to prepare for colder, darker days. It seems wild that we're entering the darker half of the year already. I'm not ready for summer to end…I still have so many things to make with plants!!! lol But alas, the wheel of the year continues to turn. During Virgo season, we prepared....

A dab on the wrist, a splash behind the ears. To the French aristocrats of the 17th century, these points held the allure of seduction. Perfume would waft from neck to nose during greetings, whispers, and embraces. The wrists and neck are also known pulse points. Did our perfumed ancestors intuit how powerful anointing these places with fragrant oils could be? Within the energetic matrix of the body, a heart protective meridian — the pericardium — runs down the arm, with a few key points...
