The Solstice-Father's Day Convergence

In the archetypal language of the Zodiac, Cancer is the great nourisher, often looked at as embodying the energy of the Divine Mother — she who tends her family and home with protective, unconditional love.

Yet this year, our solstice and transition into Cancer Season falls on Father’s Day — June 21.

At the solstice, the sun stands directly overhead as it enters the sign of Cancer. The solar principle — classically masculine, paternal, and the source of authority and light — arrives at the very crown of its power while embraced by Cancer — the sign of the Moon, classically the feminine, maternal, and source of nourishment and home.

This moment is the father at his zenith, held within the season of the mother.

At a time when so much is surfacing around the patriarchy and what being a man who is well means in this day and age, this rare meeting of the solstice and Father’s Day feels like a beautiful invitation for all of us: How might we embrace our connection with the Divine Father archetype this season?

The Divine Father archetype exists within all of us, regardless of gender, and regardless of our lived relationships with father figures in our lives. This is a universal energy that we may find both within and without.

One of my favorite Divine Father figures (did anyone else just have the George Michael song pop into their heads? I date myself…) is the Horned God.

The Horned God is lord of the forest. Guardian of the beasts. The fertile father and generous protector who loves all his children.

This is a masculine that is wild, embodied, ecological, and cyclical. He is consort and lover, not overlord. Tender of the threshold between life and death who gives himself back to the land again and again.

Yet this powerful and primal figure — so deeply rooted in earth-honoring traditions — has been demonized by religious forces. This loving and wild masculine god (one who actually appreciated women and literal fertility, btw) was distorted into that of a hooved and horned devil.

To reclaim the Horned God is to remember the holiness of the wild. It is to stand barefoot on soil and feel his presence in the rustle of leaves and the glint of an antler. And it is to rest in the sacred and loving protection of the nurturing father archetype.

In this full and wild article on this topic, I dive into:

  • Why this solstice is the perfect time to heal the inner sacred masculine within each of us
  • Chamomile as a perfect botanical ally for the solstice -- the flower that bridges the sun and the water, the father and the mother
  • Key astrological dates for what's to come -- including the full moon

An invitation

This solstice, you’re invited to find protection in nourishment.

And the fertile father and generous protector of the land -- The Horned God himself -- is a beautiful guide for this intention.

To support you, I've created a mini workshop to help you meet the Horned God in sacred ritual. This offering is grounded in real history and primary sources, so you can authentically tune into the most wild and benevolent version of this powerful deity.

This isn’t a new age recreation — this is legit ancestral wildness in the best way possible.

If you want to work with this powerful, masculine god on the height of solstice and father’s day — now is the time.

Still here? Wow - you deserve a present :) A tiny secret for you before you go:

There’s a beautiful calming point in the ear located just behind the little cartilage fold at the front of the upper ear. Hold it gently on both sides for one minute and take a slow breath. It’s especially lovely with a drop of anointing oil. ;)

This weekend, I was lucky enough to head to the wild PNW coast for solstice. Living in the dry, high desert (which I also love), it is always a balm for my soul to walk through lush coastal forests. And at this time of year, everything is blooming and the first berries - salmonberries and red huckleberries - are already ripe. Love. I've been walking these trails for decades. Singing, leaving offerings, and making medicine with the land. These forests have been generous. And this year, a new...

Tomorrow is the Gemini new moon ceremony for Rewilding the Temple — and there's still time to join us. Every month, this gathering follows the lunar cycle: a seasonal teaching, rewilding practices, a sacred anointing, and community connection in a 90-minute live ceremony. A plant ally leads the way. This month, we meet blue tansy. Blue tansy has a bright yellow flower that becomes a deep, stunning blue oil through steam distillation — the alchemical process revealing what was always inside....

Oh the blooms of spring and summer. I’ve been adding more flowers to my garden ever since we moved into our house a few year ago, and this year has been a delight. Tons of purple irises and a few gorgeous pink peonies. Wildflowers that can actually thrive in our sandy, cold high desert climate. A wall of rhododendrons that ranges from neon pink to dark purple. Humans love flowers. I think part of us recognizes that these ephemeral blossoms do more than offer seasonal delights — they transform...
